Course Description

Our next DMEK wetlab course in the USA is a one-day program in San Diego, California, on December 16th, 2017.

Participants are offered verbal presentations with practical tips and tricks on how to start with DMEK surgery. This includes a detailed review all necessary steps, from graft selection criteria, DMEK graft preparation techniques, surgical techniques for descemetorhexis, methods for intraoperative graft unfolding, complication management, and postoperative medication. In addition, the latest development in the field of endothelial keratoplasty will be discussed and participants can present their own problem cases to our DMEK surgeons.

On the course day there will be scientific presentations and video presentations that will give you a detailed overview on how to approach DMEK. This includes cases starting from preoperative graft selection through intraoperative graft unfolding and postoperative complication management. We will also discuss the latest results and developments in standard DMEK.

Furthermore, we will give you step-by-step training in DMEK graft preparation. In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to practice DMEK surgery on porcine and human eyes. Our staff will guide you through every step. You can also discuss your own cases in a one-on-one consultation with one of our specialist surgeons.

What You Will Achieve in This Course

Our goal is that after you complete the DMEK wetlab course you will:

  • be familiar with the preparation and preservation of donor corneal tissue used for DMEK;
  • be familiar with the indications, results, complications and aftercare of DMEK;
  • be confident in your ability to prepare tissue and to perform DMEK surgeries at your own clinic.

Multidisciplinary Team of Course Instructors

A multidisciplinary team of enthusiastic corneal surgeons, eye bank technicians and researchers is waiting to welcome you in San Diego, and share the details of this procedure with you, including all our DMEK protocols. All this information is first-hand since NIIOS developed these techniques and continuously aims to refine them.
